Somali President Survives Al Shabaab Car Bomb Attack

A car bomb attack in Mogadishu on March 18, 2025, targeted Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The attack, claimed by Al Shabaab, occurred at a busy intersection as the president prepared to visit the frontlines against the militants. Fortunately, President Mohamud survived unharmed, but the explosion tragically claimed four lives.

African Union Condemns the Attack

The African Union (AU) strongly condemned the bombing, calling it a “despicable act of terror.” Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, stated that the attack aimed to undermine Somalia’s leadership and instill fear among its citizens.

“The AU stands in full solidarity with the Government and people of Somalia as they work to eliminate the menace of Al Shabaab,” Youssouf declared.

He also extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery.

A Renewed Threat from Al Shabaab

Al Shabaab has long sought to overthrow Somalia’s government and impose strict Islamic rule. The group previously attempted to assassinate President Mohamud in 2014. However, this latest attack marks the first in years specifically targeting his convoy.

Eyewitnesses reported mass panic and destruction near Villa Somalia, the presidential palace. In response, presidential adviser Zakariye Hussein reassured the public that the president was “safe and heading to the front lines.”

Somalia’s Continued Fight Against Extremism

Despite the attack, the Somali government remains determined to defeat Al Shabaab. Public support for security operations continues to grow, reflecting the people’s desire for peace and stability.

The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) also reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Somali authorities in safeguarding civilians and restoring security.

Regional and International Cooperation Remains Key

Youssouf emphasized the importance of collaboration among regional and international partners to counter terrorism in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. He called for increased vigilance and stronger counterterrorism efforts.

With an active three-week offensive against Al Shabaab ongoing, this attack serves as a stark reminder of Somalia’s security challenges. However, coordinated efforts between the Somali government and the AU remain crucial in ensuring a peaceful and stable future.

What Lies Ahead?

The political landscape in Somalia is shifting under the weight of security concerns. The government’s resilience, combined with international backing, offers hope for lasting stability.

As Somalia continues its battle against extremism, unity between its leadership and global allies will be key in overcoming the threat of Al Shabaab.
