Senate Regains Authority Amid Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension Dispute
The Senate regains authority over its disciplinary proceedings after a Federal High Court in Abuja overturned an earlier order restricting its constitutional duties. This decision comes amid growing concerns in Kogi Central over an alleged plot to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan under the guise of an empowerment initiative.
A viral video surfaced yesterday showing some constituents presenting their voter’s cards in what appeared to be an endorsement of the recall process. However, the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hale Longpet, dismissed the recall claims, asserting that no official process had been initiated.
As these events unfold, a coalition of women’s organizations, Womanifesto, has voiced strong support for Akpoti-Uduaghan, condemning what they describe as intimidation, harassment, and threats to her security.

Controversial Recall Attempt Sparks Outrage in Kogi Central
Amid the court ruling, tensions rose in Okehi Local Council, where a large turnout of voters was seen allegedly backing the recall of Akpoti-Uduaghan. Reports indicate that the dissatisfaction cuts across party lines, with constituents citing concerns over poverty, infrastructure, and education.
However, some local leaders claim the recall is a politically motivated scheme orchestrated by former Governor Yahaya Bello and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. According to a statement from concerned constituents, this move is retaliation for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s electoral victory over Bello’s preferred candidate.
“This so-called empowerment programme is a smokescreen. Many participants were deceived into signing a recall petition under false pretenses. This is nothing but a calculated attempt to silence Natasha,” the statement read.
Community leaders have urged Kogi Central residents to resist political manipulation and safeguard democracy. They also called on the Federal Government to intervene and prevent any further attempts to undermine the senator.
Federal High Court Reaffirms Senate’s Right to Discipline Members
The Senate regains authority following a decisive ruling by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The judgment affirms the Senate’s constitutional power to regulate its internal affairs without judicial interference.
The case originated from a heated exchange on February 20, 2025, when Akpoti-Uduaghan protested a controversial seat reallocation during plenary. Her actions were deemed disorderly, leading to a six-month suspension.
With this latest ruling, the Senate has solidified its right to enforce disciplinary measures, marking a crucial moment for legislative independence. The case is set for further hearing on March 25.
Womanifesto Condemns Alleged Political Persecution
The Senate regains authority while Womanifesto raises concerns over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s safety. The women’s coalition denounced efforts to recall the senator, warning against politically motivated actions designed to discredit her.
In a strongly worded statement, Womanifesto condemned alleged plans to arrest Akpoti-Uduaghan upon her return to Nigeria. The group also criticized the Senate’s Ethics Committee, claiming it had been compromised by public remarks from Akpabio.
Calling for fairness and transparency, Womanifesto demanded the establishment of an independent ad hoc committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension.
As the legal and political battles continue, all eyes remain on Kogi Central, where the senator’s supporters and opponents stand divided over her fate.
