African football mourns the loss of Emmanuel Kunde, one of Cameroon’s most iconic defenders, who passed away at 68 on Friday, May 16, 2025.

The former Indomitable Lions star, whose towering legacy defined two decades of African football, leaves behind an indelible mark on the global game.

A Tragic Loss for Cameroon

According to reports,  Kunde went to bed on Thursday, May 15, and tragically did not wake up.

His remains are at the Yaoundé Central Hospital mortuary, with further announcements expected from his family.

The sudden passing of the football legend has sent shockwaves through the sport’s community.

Tributes have poured in from across the footballing world.

The Cameroon Football Federation President, Samuel Eto’o took to his social media page to share his grief, and also highlight Kunde’s 15-year career.

A Storied Career

Emmanuel Kunde was a commanding central defender renowned for his strength, tactical intelligence, and versatility, often excelling in defensive midfield.

Cameroon’s fifth-most capped player, he also ranks among the nation’s top 10 all-time goal scorers, a remarkable feat for a defender. His set-piece prowess made him a potent weapon for the Indomitable Lions.

Kunde played a pivotal role in Cameroon’s AFCON victories in 1984 and 1988.

His contributions during the 1990 FIFA World Cup, which made Cameroon to be the first African team to reach the quarter-finals, also cemented his global legend status.

His club career began with Mbankomo FC, followed by stints at Canon Yaoundé, Tempête de Nanga-Eboko FC, Provenance, and Olympic Mvolyé.

Kunde’s name remains synonymous with Canon Yaoundé, where he forged his legacy as both player and coach.

He also played in France for Laval and Reims and later coached in Gabon with US Bitam.

Tributes and Legacy

Reacting to this also was the Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana  who expressed his  shock, describing Kunde as a player whose intelligence and physicality made him a “nightmare” for strikers.

He stated further that fans and peers alike will remember Kunde as a symbol of Cameroon’s footballing golden era.

The passing of Emmanuel Kunde marks the end of an era, but his contributions to African and global football endure.

From AFCON triumphs to World Cup milestones, his legacy will continue to inspire players and fans worldwide.
