Israel conducted major airstrikes in Damascus on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, targeting a government building and a site near the presidential residence.

The operation aimed to counter attacks on the Druze community in southern Syria and pressure the ruling administration to pull back its forces.

Explosions rocked the area, leaving debris scattered and raising tensions with Syria’s leadership under interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, despite his recent outreach to Western allies.

Escalation and Motives

Israel has expressed concerns over Syria’s new leadership, accusing them of extremist leanings, and pledged to safeguard the Druze population in the south.

The strikes followed days of unrest in Sweida, where local Druze groups clashed with government troops and tribal fighters.

An official from Israel’s military confirmed the strikes hit strategic locations, citing inaction by Syrian forces against attacks on Druze civilians.

Defense leaders in Israel warned of ongoing operations until the threat subsides, while a U.S. diplomat suggested the situation might stem from a misunderstanding and could ease soon.

Violence in Sweida

Tension escalated in Sweida after Syrian authorities sent troops to manage a dispute between Druze locals and Bedouin groups, only to face resistance from the Druze.

By late Wednesday, a temporary truce was brokered by a government official and a Druze elder, though another leader called for continued fighting to secure the region.

Residents reported staying indoors, with sounds of gunfire and blasts echoing through the city. One local, speaking anonymously due to safety fears, described the distress of hiding with children amid the chaos.

Community and Global Response

The Druze, a distinct religious group with ties across Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, have drawn support from Israel’s Druze population.

Some crossed the border to assist relatives, prompting Israeli authorities to urge caution and work on their safe return.

Syria’s leader has committed to protecting minorities amid efforts to unify the nation, but reports of property damage and violence have deepened distrust.

An American envoy condemned the civilian toll and pushed for talks to achieve a lasting peace, while a Syrian statement promised accountability for unrest.

Future Outlook

The fragile ceasefire and Israel’s military actions suggest a tense period ahead. Syria’s government aims to restore order, but the conflict’s sectarian undertones could widen if unresolved.

International observers are likely to monitor closely, as stability in the region hangs in the balance.
