Gaza strike

On Thursday evening, July 17, 2025, mourners gathered in Gaza City to lay to rest two Christians killed in an Israeli strike on the Holy Family Catholic Church compound earlier that day.

The funeral, held with deep sorrow, marked a tragic moment for Gaza’s small Christian community.

The attack, which took place amid the ongoing conflict, claimed three lives and injured ten others, including the parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli.

The church, the only Catholic sanctuary in Gaza, had been sheltering displaced civilians, including vulnerable groups like children with disabilities, when the shell struck.

The Tragic Incident

The strike damaged parts of the church compound, where hundreds had sought refuge from the 21-month Israel-Hamas war.

Church officials reported that the shell hit an area housing the displaced, shattering hopes of safety.

Among the deceased were individuals like Saad Salameh, the church’s janitor, and an elderly woman receiving support, highlighting the vulnerability of those inside.

Father Romanelli, lightly wounded, had been a key figure, previously connected to the late Pope Francis, who often called to check on the community during the conflict.

Reactions and Investigations

Israel issued a rare apology, attributing the strike to “stray ammunition” and launching an investigation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed regret, calling the loss of innocent lives a tragedy, while the Israel Defense Forces suggested the incident might have been a mistake during operational activity.

However, skepticism persists, with some questioning the narrative of an accidental strike given the church’s known status as a shelter.

Pope Leo XIV, responding to the attack, renewed his plea for an immediate ceasefire, voicing solidarity with the affected community.

Broader Context and Concerns

Gaza’s Christian population, numbering around 1,000 according to recent estimates, has dwindled due to decades of conflict and emigration.

The strike on a holy site has sparked outrage, with leaders like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemning the action as unacceptable.

The incident adds to reports of widespread destruction of religious and cultural sites in Gaza, fueling debates about the protection of civilians and sacred spaces during war.

Local voices, including displaced residents, described the attack as a shocking breach of sanctuary, amplifying calls for peace.

Looking Ahead

As the community mourns, the funerals serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict.

The investigation’s outcome may shed light on the strike’s cause, but for now, it deepens the grief and uncertainty in Gaza.

With ceasefire talks stalled, the safety of remaining Christians and other civilians remains a pressing concern.

This tragic event underscores the urgent need for dialogue to end the violence and protect vulnerable populations.
