Volodymyr Zelensk

On September 9, 2025, a Russian airstrike hit Yarova, a village in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, killing 24 elderly people collecting pensions and injuring 19 others. The attack has sparked urgent calls for global action to stop the war.

Attack on Civilians

The strike happened at 11 a.m. in Yarova, 15 miles from Sloviansk, a Ukrainian stronghold. A guided bomb hit a pension pickup point, killing elderly residents instantly.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called it “cruel” and shared images of bodies scattered on the ground. The regional governor said all victims were elderly.

Rescue teams searched through rubble, finding items like a ringing phone left unanswered.

Zelenskiy’s Plea

Zelenskiy urged the United States, Europe, and the G20 to act, saying, “The world must respond.” A European leader criticized Russia’s actions, asking when the killing would stop.

This follows another recent attack that killed two aid workers in northern Ukraine, showing a pattern of targeting civilians, despite Russia’s denials.

War’s Background

The war, now in its fourth year since Russia’s 2022 invasion, has killed tens of thousands. Russia’s push in Donetsk continues as peace talks stall.

A local, Vasyl Nehoduyko, aged 65, said a drone flew over before the strike, hinting it was planned. He noted only elderly people remained in Yarova.

Impact and Response

Ukraine’s postal service reported damage to a delivery vehicle and an injured worker, planning safer pension distribution methods.

Authorities are investigating the strike as a war crime. The attack worsens Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis as civilian areas face ongoing attacks.

What’s Next

Zelenskiy’s call for pressure on Russia highlights the need for stronger global action. The Yarova attack shows the war’s toll on civilians, pushing for urgent steps to protect lives and seek peace.
