Norway

On August 24, 2025, a Libyan Coast Guard vessel fired on the MV Ocean Viking, a Norwegian-flagged ship rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.

Norway’s foreign ministry announced this on September 11, 2025. The attack put the crew, ship, and 87 rescued migrants at risk.

Norway Demands Answers

Norway condemned the shooting and urged Libya to investigate. “We’ve asked Libyan authorities to probe this and prevent future attacks,” the ministry said.

The incident occurred 40 nautical miles north of Libya in international waters, as the ship searched for a distressed migrant boat.

What Happened

The MV Ocean Viking, run by SOS Mediterranée with the Red Cross, carried 87 migrants. A Libyan patrol boat, donated by Italy in 2023, ordered the ship to leave, then fired for 20 minutes. Bullets hit the bridge, windows, and rescue gear, but no one was injured.

Dangers of Migrant Rescues

Italian authorities had allowed the Ocean Viking to pause its Sicily route to search for another migrant boat. The attack shows the risks humanitarian ships face in the Mediterranean.

The Libyan Coast Guard, funded by the EU, has a record of aggressive actions. SOS Mediterranée called the incident “unacceptable” and urged the EU to stop supporting Libya’s coast guard.

Global Concerns

Norway’s response highlights safety issues in migrant rescue missions. The shooting has drawn global attention, with calls to protect humanitarian workers and migrants. It also questions EU-backed Libyan border policies and their impact on human rights.

Why It Matters

This incident threatens vital migrant rescue operations in the Mediterranean. Norway’s push for accountability stresses the need for safer protocols to support humanitarian efforts without interference.
