On October 2, 2025, Vice President Kashim Shettima landed in Abuja after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York and strategic talks in Germany.

Senior officials welcomed him at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

UNGA Advocacy

At UNGA, Shettima delivered Nigeria’s statement, urging reforms to make the UN reflect today’s world.

He pushed for Nigeria to gain a permanent UN Security Council seat, citing its 236 million population and role in regional stability. “Fair representation strengthens global institutions,” he said.

Economic Priorities

Shettima called for debt relief, better trade access, and fair benefits from Africa’s $700 billion mineral wealth. He stressed closing the digital divide, saying,

“Artificial intelligence must include Africa.” He also backed the UN80 Initiative for a more effective UN system.

Global Partnerships

In New York, Shettima met UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who praised Nigeria’s Security Council bid.

He also pitched Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition plan to investors and engaged the Nigerian diaspora on government policies.

Germany Engagements

After UNGA, Shettima held high-level meetings in Germany to strengthen bilateral ties, focusing on economic and energy collaborations, before returning home.

Why It Matters

Shettima’s efforts highlight Nigeria’s push for global influence, fair resource control, and sustainable development, positioning it as a leader in Africa.

What’s Next

In October 2025, Nigeria will build on these talks, advancing its UN reform agenda and energy partnerships to drive economic growth.
