COMESA

On October 10, 2025, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Zamtel launched the COMESA Digital Payments platform.

This innovative system transforms cross-border trade for 21 member states.

Boosting Regional Commerce

The COMESA Digital Payments platform enables fast, affordable transactions in local currencies. It began with a Zambia-Malawi pilot corridor, reducing reliance on foreign currencies for traders.

Empowering Small Businesses

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) drive 80% of regional businesses and 60% of jobs. The COMESA Digital Payments platform supports these enterprises, particularly women and youth, by lowering financial barriers.

Cutting Transaction Costs

Zambia’s Technology Ministry emphasized that the COMESA Digital Payments system simplifies payments. By reducing costs, it fosters economic growth and enhances trade efficiency across the region.

Zamtel’s Pivotal Role

Zamtel, a Zambian telecom, spearheads the COMESA Digital Payments pilot. The company stressed the need for unified regulations to address tax differences and compliance issues, ensuring smooth operations.

Instant Cross-Border Payments

The platform allows users to send money in their local currency, instantly converted for recipients. Thus, the COMESA Digital Payments system breaks traditional mobile operator boundaries, enabling seamless transactions.

Summit Showcases Initiative

The launch aligned with the 24th COMESA Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

Zambia’s Foreign Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, attended, highlighting the COMESA Digital Payments platform’s regional significance.

Zamtel’s Remarkable Recovery

Once financially troubled, Zamtel now thrives, aligning with Zambia’s digital transformation under President Hakainde Hichilema.

The COMESA Digital Payments initiative reflects this turnaround, showcasing innovation.

Addressing Infrastructure Gaps

Success hinges on stronger ICT infrastructure and regulatory harmony. Some areas lack connectivity, posing challenges. Nevertheless, the COMESA Digital Payments platform pushes for digital progress now.

Economic Benefits for All

The platform promotes inclusive growth by empowering MSMEs. It creates jobs and stabilizes economies, making the COMESA Digital Payments system a catalyst for regional prosperity.

Policy and Innovation Needs

Long-term success requires unified tax frameworks and sustained innovation. Furthermore, political commitment from member states will ensure the COMESA Digital Payments platform’s impact endures.

Vision for a Digital Future

The COMESA Digital Payments system symbolizes a connected, competitive economy. By fostering integration, it paves the way for sustainable development across Eastern and Southern Africa in 2025.
