Legacy of Raila

Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a pivotal figure in the nation’s democratic journey, passed away at 80, and his body arrived in Nairobi on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

A large, emotional crowd gathered to honor him, launching a week of national mourning. Odinga’s legacy as a champion of unity and reform resonates deeply across Kenya.

Emotional Homecoming in Nairobi

The plane carrying Odinga’s remains touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport just before 10 a.m. Thousands lined the streets, waving Kenyan flags, singing the national anthem, and chanting “Baba” in tribute.

A vibrant yet somber procession, including “boda boda” motorcycle taxis, escorted the hearse, reflecting his bond with ordinary citizens.

Odinga’s death, attributed to a heart attack during a family walk in India, has stirred profound grief. His body will lie in state at Parliament for public viewing, with a national funeral set for Friday. His final resting place will be Bondo, where he will be buried on Sunday.

A Champion of Democracy

Born to former Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila Odinga shaped Kenya’s political landscape. In the 1990s, he fiercely advocated for multiparty democracy, enduring imprisonment without trial.

His five presidential runs, including a contested 2022 bid, defined his resilience, though he never won the presidency.

The 2007 election loss, which he claimed was rigged, sparked violence but led to a power-sharing deal, making him Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. His tenacity earned him respect as a relentless fighter for fairness and inclusion.

A Legacy of Unity

Odinga’s influence transcended political divides. President William Ruto, once his rival, declared a seven-day mourning period with flags at half-mast, calling his death a profound loss.

After the 2022 election, Odinga joined Ruto’s inclusive government, prioritizing national unity over rivalry—a move he saw as vital for Kenya’s stability.

His ability to bridge divides made him a beloved figure, known for connecting with both elites and grassroots communities. Supporters view him as a patriot who put Kenya first.

National and Global Impact

The outpouring of grief reflects Odinga’s role in shaping modern Kenya. His advocacy for democratic reforms inspired generations, while his later focus on unity showed pragmatic leadership. The Nairobi procession, blending solemnity with celebration, mirrors his vibrant legacy.

As Kenya prepares for his funeral, global leaders have joined in honoring him, recognizing his contributions to African democracy. The ceremonies will likely draw thousands, underscoring his enduring impact.

Odinga’s passing marks the end of an era, but his vision lives on. Kenya now reflects on his sacrifices, hoping to build on his dream of a united, democratic nation.
