Hong Kong Cargo Plane Crashes into Sea, Kills Two

A cargo plane in Hong Kong lost control during landing and crashed into the sea on Monday, October 20, 2025, resulting in the deaths of two security officers.

The Boeing aircraft swerved off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport, collided with a patrol vehicle, and slid into the water, marking one of the worst accidents at the facility since it opened in 1998.

Airport officials are probing the cause of the Boeing model’s deviation from the tarmac. The damaged fuselage now rests partially underwater, with its escape slide inflated, visible near the shore.

Incident Details Unfold

Steven Yiu, head of airport operations at the Airport Authority Hong Kong, described the sequence. The flight from Dubai strayed from the north runway around 4 a.m. local time, broke through a barrier, and struck the patrol car parked nearby. The vehicle was not on the runway but got dragged into the sea.

A 30-year-old officer died at the site, and a 41-year-old succumbed after hospital treatment. Divers recovered both from the submerged car, about 5 meters from shore.

Emirates Airlines confirmed all crew members are safe, with no cargo aboard. The plane was under a short-term lease from Act Airlines, who handled operations. The airline stressed that weather and runway conditions were ideal for landing.

Official Response and Investigation

A diagram from authorities illustrated the plane’s sharp left turn midway down the runway. No distress signal was sent, and the crew didn’t respond to radio calls. The north runway is shut temporarily, but the other two remain open, with no expected delays.

The Transport and Logistics Bureau voiced grave worry, tasking the Air Accident Investigation Authority with a thorough inquiry. Police may pursue criminal charges if needed. Rescue helicopters and boats from government services aided the response.

Airport’s Global Role

Hong Kong International Airport, a cargo powerhouse, added its third runway last November after an eight-year, $18 billion expansion. This upgrade aims to sustain its edge as a key aviation center amid rising global traffic.

The crash disrupts this momentum, prompting questions on safety protocols. Experts note such incidents are rare at the hub, but they highlight the need for ongoing vigilance in high-stakes operations.

Community and Industry Shock

The tragedy has stunned airport workers and locals, with tributes pouring in for the fallen officers. Their bravery in patrolling the perimeter is now honored amid grief. Families and colleagues await answers from the probe, hoping it prevents future mishaps.

As recovery efforts continue, the airport pledges full cooperation. This event serves as a stark reminder of aviation’s risks, even at world-class facilities. Officials promise transparency, vowing to address any lapses swiftly to restore trust.

The incident underscores the human cost behind seamless air travel. As investigators piece together events, the focus remains on supporting affected families and enhancing safeguards for all users of the busy skyway.
