UN Votes on Western Sahara Autonomy Plan

SAHARA

The clock’s ticking on a 50-year standoff. This Friday, the UN Security Council will ballot on a bold US-penned resolution declaring genuine autonomy under Moroccan rule as the “most practical path” to peace in Western Sahara.

Morocco insists the vast desert territory is its own. The Polisario Front, backed by Algeria, fights for full independence. At stake? A fragile ceasefire, displaced lives, and a powder keg in North Africa.

What’s in the Resolution?

  • Autonomy blueprint: Local government for laws, courts, and daily affairs. Morocco keeps defense, diplomacy, and religious oversight.
  • No independence vote: Rejects Polisario’s call for a referendum including sovereignty as an option.
  • Peacekeeper extension: Renews MINURSO (UN mission) for another year to monitor the truce.

To pass: 9 yes votes, no veto from the big five (US, UK, France, Russia, China). Russia and China? Still on the fence.

Battle Lines Drawn

  • Morocco’s 2007 plan revived: First floated 18 years ago, now with heavy hitters in its corner.
  • Polisario & Algeria dig in: “No talks if autonomy is the starting line.” Algeria vows to block any pro-Morocco text.

Global Momentum Shifts

The tide’s turning:

  • Trump (July 2025): Called Morocco’s plan “the only real solution.” US envoy pushes Algeria-Morocco détente.
  • France: Recognized Rabat’s claim, unlocked investments.
  • UK (June 2025): Third P5 member to endorse autonomy.
  • Spain (ex-colonial power): Switched sides to back Morocco.
  • EU ripple: More member states leaning Rabat’s way.

Why It Matters

  • 50,000+ refugees in Algerian camps wait for a homeland.
  • Phosphate riches & Atlantic coast fuel economic stakes.
  • Ceasefire since 1991 hangs by a thread—clashes flared in 2020.

If the resolution passes, it locks autonomy as the framework, sidelining independence dreams. A veto or failure? Talks freeze, tensions simmer.

Will the UN finally break the deadlock, or just kick the can down the Sahara? Drop your take in the comments!
