President Bola Tinubu hosted Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, at the State House in Abuja on Monday, 17 November 2025. The meeting focused on Nigeria’s economic reforms and the central role of young people in the country’s future.

“Surgery, Not Painkillers”

Tinubu told the Duke that removing the fuel subsidy and unifying the exchange rate were difficult but essential steps.

“These decisions were like surgery to fix deep problems – not just painkillers for short relief,” he said.

Early results are showing:

  • Foreign reserves now above $40 billion
  • Inflation starting to slow
  • New investments flowing into energy and technology

Youth at the Heart of the Plan

The president stressed that every reform is designed to create opportunities for Nigeria’s youth.

“Our young people will own and lead this new Nigeria. We are giving them skills to compete anywhere in the world,” Tinubu said, linking the reforms to Nigeria’s upcoming G20 priorities on youth empowerment.

Duke Praises Nigerian Talent

Prince Edward, Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, called Nigerian youth “the country’s greatest strength”.

He updated the president on the Award programme, which has reached over 30,000 young Nigerians since 1986 and will host its next international forum in Lagos.

Stronger UK–Nigeria Partnership

Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in education, skills training, and climate action. UK–Nigeria trade already stands at more than £7 billion a year.

As the Duke continues his visit to Lagos and Enugu, President Tinubu repeated his message: “Nigeria is open for business, and our youth are ready to lead.”
