Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe Fight for Lookman

LOOKMAN

Turkey’s biggest football rivals are preparing for a fierce showdown in the January transfer window. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe have intensified their efforts to sign Nigeria international Ademola Lookman.

The 28-year-old winger has become a prime target following a sharp deterioration in his relationship with his current club, Atalanta. Despite being a standout performer in Serie A last season, Lookman has grown increasingly frustrated in Bergamo.

Tensions Rise in Italy

The friction began in the summer when Atalanta blocked a potential move to Inter Milan. The Italian champions offered €45 million. However, Atalanta insisted on €50 million. This firm stance reportedly angered the player.

Consequently, tensions escalated. Lookman briefly walked out of training at one point. The situation reached a boiling point on November 5 during a Champions League match against Marseille. The winger was involved in a heated touchline exchange with then-manager Ivan Juric.

Although Atalanta has since dismissed Juric, the development is unlikely to repair the fractured relationship. Lookman is reportedly pushing for a fresh start.

The Turkish Giants Circle

Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe are eager to capitalize on the situation.

Galatasaray views Lookman as a marquee signing. They are reportedly willing to offer a lucrative contract worth €9 million per year. The club’s leadership envisions a powerful Nigerian attacking duo, planning to pair Lookman with his Super Eagles teammate, Victor Osimhen.

Lookman is reportedly open to the move. He is enthusiastic about the possibility of teaming up with Osimhen at Rams Park.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe has monitored the winger for months. They even submitted an offer shortly after the summer window closed, which Atalanta rejected immediately.

Performance Concerns

Despite the strong interest, there are reservations. Galatasaray’s management is reportedly hesitant due to the player’s recent dip in form.

Last season, Lookman was prolific, recording 15 goals and five assists. In contrast, he has struggled this term. He has netted just one goal in seven Serie A appearances. This marks a significant drop for a player who consistently hit double figures in the last three seasons.

What Happens Next?

Lookman’s contract runs until June 2027. This gives Atalanta a strong negotiating position. Furthermore, the player is set to join Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations later in December, which could complicate a mid-season transfer.

Atalanta’s hierarchy will assess Lookman’s form and attitude under new coach Raffaele Palladino in the coming weeks. European clubs like Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are also watching closely. However, if Atalanta decides to sell, the Turkish giants appear ready to make the first move.
