Cameroon Purge: Coach Fired, Stars Dropped

COACH

The Cameroon national team faces major changes. With less than three weeks until the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, the federation has sacked head coach Marc Brys. They have appointed David Pagou as his replacement.

This decision follows the team’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Immediately, the new manager signaled a bold change in direction.

Radical Squad Changes

David Pagou is an experienced tactician in the Cameroonian domestic league. He named a 28-player squad for the tournament, which starts on December 21.

However, the biggest talking point is the omission of Vincent Aboubakar. The 33-year-old captain is a club legend. His 45 international goals trail only Samuel Eto’o. Additionally, he scored the winning goal that secured the 2017 AFCON title.

The new coach also dropped goalkeeper André Onana. Onana is currently playing on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor from Manchester United.

Instead, the squad will rely on other talents. This includes Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo.

The End of the Brys Era

Marc Brys’s dismissal marks the end of a turbulent tenure. The sports ministry appointed the veteran Belgian coach last year. However, this move reportedly went against the wishes of the football federation led by Samuel Eto’o.

On Monday, the federation released a list of grievances. They accused Brys of insubordination and subterfuge. His position became untenable after a 1-0 loss to Congo last month. That defeat sealed Cameroon’s exit from the 2026 World Cup race.

A Tough Road Ahead

The incoming coaching staff faces a race against time. They must prepare the squad quickly for the tournament in Morocco.

Cameroon is in a difficult group. It includes Mozambique and the defending champions, Ivory Coast. The Indomitable Lions will open their campaign on December 24 against Gabon.
