MODI

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a stirring call for unity among developing nations. He urged the “Global South” to assert its collective strength on the world stage.

Modi addressed members of the Ethiopian parliament on Wednesday. During his speech, he emphasized that cooperation between emerging economies is essential. He argued this is necessary for navigating the complexities of the modern world.

This speech marked a key moment in the second leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour.

“Cooperation is Power”

During his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the shared heritage of India and Ethiopia. He described both nations as ancient civilizations. Furthermore, he framed their partnership as a model for the wider region.

“Solidarity is strength, and cooperation is power. Today, as nations of the Global South and as ancient civilisations, as friends, India and Ethiopia are standing together,” Modi declared.

Honoring Anti-Colonial History

Earlier in the day, Modi paid his respects at the Adwa Victory Monument. This landmark commemorates Ethiopia’s 19th-century military triumph over Italian forces.

Modi used this historical event to draw a parallel to current geopolitical challenges.

“This morning, I had the honour to lay a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument,” he told the MPs.

He described the monument as a timeless symbol. He noted that Ethiopia’s victory inspired the colonized world to fight for dignity. Consequently, in times of global uncertainty, it serves as a powerful reminder.

“The people of the Global South can stand up for themselves,” he added.

A Strategic Partnership

Beyond the rhetoric, the visit underscores the deepening bilateral ties between New Delhi and Addis Ababa. The two nations are already closely linked through trade and defense agreements.

Observers note that Ethiopia offers growing economic stability. Additionally, its geographic position in East Africa provides a vital platform. Experts believe this allows India to expand its commercial footprint across the continent.

The Wider Diplomatic Mission

Modi’s visit to Ethiopia is part of a broader four-day trip. The tour is designed to bolster India’s strategic interests in the region.

The itinerary also includes stops in Jordan and Oman. Both nations are critical partners for India. They are major energy producers capable of helping meet the South Asian giant’s surging energy requirements.
