Troops Deployed Ahead of CAR Elections

ELECTIONS

Authorities are racing to secure the Central African Republic (CAR) ahead of upcoming general elections. Consequently, reinforcements from the Central African Armed Forces (FACA) have deployed to the volatile Vakaga region.

This operation took place on December 16, 2025. MINUSCA, the UN peacekeeping mission, provided essential logistical air support. The deployment is part of the Integrated Election Security Plan (PISE). This plan aims to safeguard the integrity of the voting process across the nation.

A Historic but Contested Election

The country braces for a massive day of voting on December 28. For the first time in decades, the ballot will include municipal elections alongside presidential and parliamentary races.

However, controversy has marred the lead-up to the polls. Human rights organizations have raised serious alarms. They question the democratic credibility and inclusiveness of the process. These concerns stem largely from the fact that authorities barred key opposition candidates from running until mid-November.

Furthermore, political tensions remain high. Critics argue that President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has consolidated too much power. This follows a controversial referendum in 2023 that significantly expanded his executive authority.

Logistical and Security Challenges

Beyond political friction, practical challenges loom large. Observers remain skeptical about the government’s capacity to manage the logistics. Specifically, they worry about opening all polling stations on time in a country with limited infrastructure.

The current military surge aims to mitigate these risks. The reinforced FACA personnel will work alongside UN peacekeepers. Their task is to secure the electoral environment. Additionally, the security mandate extends to protecting candidates and all stakeholders involved in the vote.

Officials confirmed that the operation in Vakaga is just the beginning. Similar deployments are scheduled for other prefectures in the coming days. MINUSCA will continue to provide logistical backing for these movements.
