CRETE

Greek authorities successfully coordinated a massive rescue mission early Friday morning. The operation began after a vessel carrying 545 migrants sent a distress signal near Gavdos. Gavdos is a small island located south of Crete.

The Hellenic Coast Guard acted immediately to prevent a potential tragedy. They deployed three patrol boats and received critical support from three Frontex vessels. Additionally, three nearby commercial ships assisted in the effort.

Safe Arrival and Temporary Housing

The mission ensured that all passengers reached the shores of Crete safely. According to official reports, the group consisted primarily of men from Bangladesh, Egypt, and Pakistan.

Once the migrants arrived, authorities managed their care through several specific steps:

  • Initial Transfer: First, the group was brought to the port of Agia Galini.
  • Overnight Lodging: Later, officials moved the individuals to a temporary facility in the Latzimas area of Rethymno.
  • Essential Provisions: Local teams provided mattresses and blankets to prepare the space for the night.

However, local officials have voiced concerns about the housing. They noted that the current facility might not be suitable, even for short-term stays.

A Day of Multiple Rescues

This large-scale operation was not the only incident in the region on Friday. Earlier that day, another rescue took place south of Gavdos. In that instance, authorities saved 32 migrants from a small boat. These individuals were safely transported to the port of Paleochora.

Consequently, these back-to-back incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in the Mediterranean. Local authorities and international agencies continue to struggle with busy migration routes south of Crete.
