Burkina Faso’s army has announced that its counterterrorism forces captured around 60 extremists near the borders with Mali and Niger during operations that started on July 8.

In a statement on Thursday, the military shared that they had also destroyed several extremist bases and seized explosives.

The area along the Mali and Niger borders is known to have jihadist groups who are responsible for kidnapping and killing government officials. These extremists often work with other Islamic militant groups across West Africa’s large Sahel region.

On the same day, Burkina Faso’s security minister reported the killing of a village chief and a farmer in Baraboule, a troubled area in Soum province. The attackers escaped into Mali.
