Burkina Faso’s military government has ordered three French diplomats to leave the country, accusing them of engaging in activities that threaten the state.

The diplomats, including two political advisers, were given 48 hours to leave. The government did not explain what the diplomats had done.

This decision worsens the already tense relationship between Burkina Faso and France since the military took control in 2022.

In the past, the government has expelled French soldiers, called back their ambassador, and banned some French media channels.

Some believe the expulsion is linked to the diplomats’ meetings with members of civil society.

Burkina Faso’s government has been criticized for limiting freedom of speech while dealing with attacks from groups linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State. The French foreign ministry has not yet responded to this situation.
