Gov’t To Revive Kampala City Festival To Boost Tourism

The government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, has announced plans to revive the Kampala City Festival to enhance tourism in the capital.

This initiative is outlined in the 2024/25 National Budget Framework Paper, where the Ministry emphasizes that facilitating the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) celebrations will effectively showcase the city’s tourism offerings.

As part of this project, the Ministry aims to develop a unique Kampala City Tourism brand and establish a distinct identity for the city. The Ministry of Tourism has been allocated 248.7 billion Ugandan shillings in the 2024/25 national budget. Additionally, KCCA has received 796.409 billion shillings for infrastructure development during the same period.

The annual Kampala City Festival was originally initiated under former KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi Semakula. The event, which attracted large crowds to the city center, was created to celebrate culture, innovation, unity, and social life. It also provided a platform for businesses, traders, and organizations to showcase and promote their products. KCCA typically allocated between 700 and 900 million shillings for organizing the festival.
