Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, has suspended new residential orders across Nigeria due to a pending approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a proposed price increase. This decision marks a significant development in Nigeria’s internet connectivity landscape, as Starlink is known for its high-speed satellite-based internet service, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

According to reports, the suspension affects orders for residential kits, with Starlink awaiting regulatory directives before proceeding with the price adjustment. The company has stated that the move is necessary to align with operational costs and ensure the sustainability of its services in Nigeria.

Nigerian customers who attempt to place new orders for Starlink kits are now being met with notifications indicating that sales are temporarily on hold until regulatory approval is granted. The proposed price hike, which has yet to be disclosed in detail, has raised questions about its impact on accessibility for consumers, especially those in rural and low-income communities.

Starlink began operations in Nigeria in December 2022, becoming the first satellite internet provider licensed by the NCC. Since then, the service has been instrumental in bridging the connectivity gap in areas with limited access to traditional broadband infrastructure. However, affordability has been a recurring concern, as the initial cost of the Starlink hardware and subscription fees is significantly higher than those of local internet providers.

The suspension has sparked mixed reactions. While some customers appreciate the transparency of the process, others worry about potential delays in access to internet services, particularly in regions heavily reliant on Starlink for connectivity.

The NCC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the timeline for the price approval. However, regulatory experts have noted that the process may take some time, as it involves a thorough review to balance consumer interests with market realities.

Despite this temporary setback, Starlink remains a critical player in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, with its innovative technology offering unique solutions to the country’s connectivity challenges. The resolution of the current regulatory hurdle will be pivotal in determining the company’s future trajectory in Nigeria.
