Nigeria has taken delivery of 11,200 doses of the Mpox vaccine, facilitated by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to strengthen its public health response to the disease.

The shipment, which arrived on Friday, marks a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against the Mpox virus. This is the first batch of vaccines provided under Gavi’s initiative to support countries facing outbreaks of the viral disease, formerly known as monkeypox.

Health authorities confirmed that the vaccines are specifically designed for use among high-risk groups, including healthcare workers, laboratory staff, and individuals with known exposure to the virus. The Federal Ministry of Health noted that these groups are prioritized to prevent further transmission and manage the risks associated with the disease effectively.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, emphasized the importance of the vaccine delivery in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat Mpox. “This shipment represents our commitment to ensuring the safety of all Nigerians while strengthening our public health infrastructure,” he stated.

Mpox, a viral zoonotic disease, has re-emerged as a global health concern, with several outbreaks reported in recent years. Nigeria has recorded multiple cases since its resurgence, prompting the government to ramp up surveillance and response measures.

The arrival of the vaccine doses is seen as a timely intervention. The Minister of Health, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, expressed gratitude to Gavi and other partners for their support in tackling the disease. “This collaborative effort underscores the need for global partnerships in addressing public health challenges,” Pate remarked.

Gavi, known for its role in promoting equitable access to vaccines worldwide, has been instrumental in ensuring that developing countries like Nigeria can access critical vaccines during health crises. This shipment forms part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impact of Mpox in regions where outbreaks persist.

Public health experts have urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, emphasizing the need to adhere to preventive measures such as hygiene practices and avoiding contact with infected individuals. Meanwhile, plans are underway to distribute the vaccines across designated health facilities nationwide.

As Nigeria strengthens its vaccination campaign, health officials are optimistic about reducing the burden of Mpox and preventing future outbreaks.
