Members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS) are stepping up their campaign for pension enhancements and timely payments. Recent reports indicate growing frustration among retirees over delayed entitlements, prompting a wave of advocacy and protests across the country.

NUPCPS members are calling on the Federal Government to improve pension payments under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). The union highlighted the need for urgent pension enhancements to address the rising cost of living, which continues to impact retirees disproportionately.

According to NUPCPS leaders, retirees deserve adjustments to reflect inflationary trends. “We are not asking for luxury; we’re asking for dignity in retirement,” said one representative.

Frustrated by unpaid entitlements, pensioners have issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening mass protests if their demands are not met. The pensioners have vowed to occupy strategic locations in Abuja until their grievances are addressed.

The Federal Government, through the National Pension Commission (PenCom), assured retirees of its commitment to resolving all pending issues. PenCom announced the release of ₦22 billion to settle accrued pension rights of retirees, signaling progress in clearing the backlog of unpaid entitlements.

Speaking on the matter, a PenCom spokesperson said, “We are working tirelessly to ensure all accrued pension rights liabilities are cleared, and we urge pensioners to remain patient as we address these issues.”

While the recent release of funds is a positive step, pensioners are demanding greater transparency in the disbursement process. They urge PenCom and other agencies to ensure that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries promptly.

The delay in pension payments has sparked outrage, with many retirees struggling to make ends meet. Advocacy groups have joined the call for reforms, stressing the need for sustainable pension policies that guarantee timely disbursements and adjustments for inflation.

The Federal Government faces increasing pressure to fulfill its obligations to retirees. As the pensioners prepare for mass protests, their demand for a dignified retirement underscores the urgency of addressing systemic delays and enhancing the CPS.
