Nigerian singer Tems has clinched the award for Best African Music Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards, marking a historic win in the newly introduced category. The victory cements her status as one of Africa’s leading musical exports, further propelling her international success.

Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, triumphed over a strong lineup of African superstars, including Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Asake, and Yemi Alade. The Best African Music Performance category was introduced to recognize outstanding contributions to the global music landscape from African artists, a move widely applauded as a milestone for the continent’s music industry.

The announcement was met with resounding applause as Tems took the stage to accept her award. In her speech, she expressed gratitude to her fans, team, and fellow nominees, dedicating the win to African musicians pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation.

This latest Grammy win is not Tems’ first recognition on the global stage. She previously won a Grammy for her contribution to the hit song “Wait for U” by Future featuring Drake, solidifying her position as a force to reckon with in the industry.

Other Nigerian artists also received Grammy nominations, underscoring the growing influence of Afrobeats and African music worldwide. Burna Boy, a previous Grammy winner, was nominated in multiple categories, reinforcing his dominance in the global music space. Wizkid and Davido were also among the prominent names in the race for Grammy glory.

Yemi Alade, another Nigerian star, earned a nomination, further highlighting the strides made by female artists in the Afrobeats genre. Her nomination, alongside Tems’ victory, is seen as a significant moment for female representation in African music.

Burna Boy, who has been a consistent presence at the Grammys in recent years, was nominated in several categories, including Best Global Music Album. His ability to seamlessly blend Afrobeats with other genres has earned him international acclaim and positioned him as one of Africa’s most successful artists.

The presence of multiple Nigerian artists at the Grammy Awards signals the rapid expansion of African music’s global footprint. The recognition from the Recording Academy is seen as a validation of the genre’s commercial and artistic growth, as well as an acknowledgment of its influence on the global music industry.

Asake, known for his unique fusion of Fuji, Afrobeats, and Amapiano sounds, also received a nomination, reflecting the evolving diversity of Nigerian music. His success in the industry has been rapid, and a Grammy nomination marks another milestone in his rising career.

Davido, who has been a dominant figure in the Afrobeats scene for over a decade, was also in contention for an award. His latest Grammy nomination adds to his long list of international accolades and affirms his status as a key player in the music industry.

The Grammy Awards continue to serve as a global platform for celebrating musical excellence, and the inclusion of a dedicated category for African music is expected to further amplify the reach of the genre. With Tems’ historic win and the multiple nominations for Nigerian artists, it is evident that African music is no longer just an emerging genre but a global powerhouse.

The success of these artists has also inspired a new wave of musicians from the continent, eager to showcase their talent on the world stage. As Afrobeats continues to evolve, more artists are expected to break into international markets, further solidifying Africa’s position in the global music landscape.

Tems’ Grammy win is not just a personal achievement but a moment of pride for Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Her success serves as an inspiration for aspiring musicians and a testament to the limitless potential of African music in the global arena.
