Algeria Secures AFCON Qualification with a 2-1 Victory Over Niger

October 10, 2022

1 minute read

Algeria has qualified for the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating Niger 2-1 in a crucial match on Monday. This victory ensures the Fennecs remain at the top of Group F with 12 points, guaranteeing their place among the top two teams in the group.

The game, which took place near Tunis, saw Algeria face stiff competition from Niger’s Menas despite playing at home. Baghdad Bounedjah opened the scoring early for Algeria in the sixth minute after receiving a well-timed pass from Riyad Mahrez. However, the match remained tightly contested throughout, with Niger creating several opportunities to level the score.

In the second half, Niger’s Alhassane had a golden chance to equalize, but his effort was poorly executed, leaving the score unchanged. Algeria managed to hold on to their lead and secure the win, confirming their qualification for the upcoming AFCON tournament.

Meanwhile, Nigeria, who had suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Guinea-Bissau last Friday, managed to exact revenge by winning the return fixture with the same scoreline. Both Algeria and Nigeria now look ahead to the next stages of the tournament as they aim for success in the continental championship.
