The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned the deadly assault on a Jewish gathering in Australia, labeling it a “heinous terrorist attack.”
The tragedy occurred at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, a popular location where members of the community had assembled to celebrate Hanukkah. At least 15 people lost their lives in the violence.
The victims included vulnerable members of the community, such as a 10-year-old girl, a rabbi, and a Holocaust survivor.
AU Calls for Accountability
In a statement released on Sunday, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the chairperson of the African Union, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and reaffirmed the AU’s stance against terrorism in all its forms.
Youssouf emphasized that this massacre highlights a critical global need.
“The massacre underscores the imperative of protecting all communities from hatred, violence and extremism,” he stated.
He further urged nations and societies to foster unity and cooperation. The chairperson stressed the importance of preventing radicalization, countering violent extremism, and ensuring that those responsible for such acts face justice.
Deadliest Attack in Decades
The shooting is recorded as the deadliest in Australia in nearly 30 years.
According to authorities, the perpetrators were a father and son. Police intervention resulted in the death of one gunman. The second suspect, a 24-year-old man, sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The toll of the attack extends beyond the deceased. As of Monday morning, at least 38 other individuals were being treated in hospitals, with several reported to be in critical condition.
