The 33rd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) officially began today in Cameroon, with a vibrant opening ceremony at Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé, attended by President Paul Biya. Hosted by Cameroon for the first time since 1972, the tournament’s opening match featured Cameroon’s national team, the Indomitable Lions, facing Burkina Faso in Group A.

The Africa Cup of Nations will span multiple cities across Cameroon, including Douala, Bafoussam, Garoua, and Limbe. The opening match at Olembe Stadium saw fans filling the venue under COVID-19 protocols that included vaccination proof, negative COVID-19 tests, and mask mandates. Stadiums hosting Cameroonian games will operate at 80% capacity, while others will allow 60% capacity to maintain safety during the pandemic.

Cameroonian football icon and president of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, emphasized the tournament’s importance for national unity, stating it represents a chance for Cameroonians to showcase their “indomitable spirit.” Alongside the five-time AFCON champions, teams from 24 nations will compete over the next month, aiming to lift the trophy on February 6, 2022

Scurity concerns have been heightened in the Anglophone region, particularly near Limbe, where separatist groups have threatened to disrupt the tournament. Additional security forces have been deployed to ensure the safety of players and fans, with regular patrols and checks around the stadiums. Despite these challenges, the Cameroonian government has reinforced its commitment to a safe and successful tournament

With Cameroon seeking its sixth title, the AFCON tournament is anticipated to be a major celebration of African football, attracting fans from across the continent. Fans across Cameroon, gathered at fan zones, will be able to enjoy live broadcasts of games, adding to the festive atmosphere as the nation takes center stage in African football once again.
