Former Kakamega Senator and renowned playwright Cleophas Malala has been arrested in Kenya for allegedly scripting Echoes of War, a controversial high school drama play currently at the center of national debate.

Malala confirmed his arrest on Wednesday, April 9, via a video posted on his verified social media pages.

In the video, the former UDA Secretary-General expressed shock over the manner of his arrest, claiming that more than 50 officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stormed his premises.

“I am now being arrested for scripting a play, Echoes of War. Shame!” Malala wrote in his post. “It has reached a point in Kenya where I get arrested for writing a play, and they come with fifty police officers. What crime have I committed?”

Echoes of War Controversy and Legal Intervention

The arrest follows weeks of controversy surrounding the play, Echoes of War, which was performed by Butere Girls High School at the Kenya National Drama and Film Festivals.

The play had initially been pulled from the 2025 Western Regional Gala, despite winning at the Sub-County level and ranking third at the Regional Festival.

On April 3, High Court Judge Wilfrida Okwany ruled in favor of Butere Girls, ordering the school principal, Jennifer Omondi, to recall the 50 students involved in the production for national festival participation in Nakuru.

The court also suspended any directive that barred the school from competing at the national level.

Education Ministry Confirms Play Will Proceed

Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok confirmed on April 7 that the play would indeed be showcased at the 63rd edition of the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival in Nakuru County.

“There were issues raised earlier, but they have been resolved. I don’t want us to dwell on them—I can assure the public that the play will go on,” said PS Bitok during the festival’s official opening at Melvin Jones Hall.

About the Play Echoes of War

Written by Cleophas Malala, Echoes of War explores themes of civil liberties, governance, and youth activism, resonating strongly with Kenya’s Generation Z.

Set in the fictional Royal Velvet Emirates, the narrative follows a post-civil war nation where youth lead efforts to rebuild healthcare, education, and justice systems.

The protagonist, Mustafa, is an IT student who creates Telemedicine—a digital platform linking patients with doctors globally. His past political statements on social media, however, draw him into conflict with authorities.

Another central figure is Anifa Imana, an artificial intelligence system that personifies the complex role of technology in governance, both as a tool for reform and as a potential threat.

Malala’s History of Political Theatre

Malala’s arrest has drawn comparisons to a 2013 incident where his earlier play, Shackles of Doom, was banned due to its politically charged content.

As with Echoes of War, the play addressed inequality and social injustice, further solidifying Malala’s reputation as a dramatist unafraid to challenge the status quo.
