Recognition for Contributions to African Literature

Liberian author Edmund Zar-Zar Bargblor has been honored by the West Africa Intellectual Organization (WAIO) for his impactful writings on Africa’s governance, corruption, and socio-economic development. The award ceremony took place on March 24, 2025, at WAIO’s regional headquarters in Accra, Ghana. This accolade underscores the growing influence of Liberian writers in the global literary arena.

Celebrated Works Addressing Governance and Corruption

Bargblor’s extensive body of work includes thought-provoking articles such as:

  • “Liberia’s Self-Governance: Are We Truly Custodians of Our Nation?” – A deep dive into the responsibilities of national stewardship.
  • “The Evil Hands of Corruption: Those Who Perpetuate Corruption in Society Are Also Victimized by Their Actions.” – An exploration of the cyclical nature of corruption.
  • “Are Liberians Really Ignorant of History or Merely Indifferent to the Lessons of Liberia’s Past?” – A reflective piece on historical awareness and its implications.

With over 25 years of writing experience, Bargblor has consistently shed light on critical issues affecting Liberia and the broader African continent.

WAIO’s Commitment to African Intellectual Excellence

The West Africa Intellectual Organization annually identifies and honors key intellectual figures across the continent for their “Patriotic Giant” contributions. The organization also maintains a mini-library housing works by distinguished African writers, activists, politicians, journalists, and artists, emphasizing the importance of Africans narrating their own stories.

A Call to Emerging Liberian Writers

Upon receiving the award, Bargblor expressed gratitude to WAIO and encouraged budding Liberian writers to harness the power of the pen to effect change, stating, “The pen has power; let’s change our world.” His recognition marks a significant milestone for Liberia, being the first recipient from the country since 2009, and paves the way for greater acknowledgment by regional bodies.
