Mr. Matano is a businessman based in Nairobi who is eager to leverage the latest technology to stay competitive in today’s market.

Entrepreneurs like him, not just in Kenya but across Africa, are witnessing a significant shift. There’s a growing enthusiasm for starting, expanding, and scaling their ventures, as they recognize the multitude of opportunities available. However, many face obstacles that prevent them from fully capitalizing on these prospects, including limited market access, regulatory challenges, stiff competition, a lack of online marketing expertise, and difficulties in establishing a strong brand presence.

To navigate these challenges, Mr. Matano has turned to the products and services offered by Safaricom Business, particularly beneficial for micro and small enterprises (MSEs) like his labor outsourcing company.

As a purpose-driven technology firm, Safaricom is dedicated to empowering Kenyans through its extensive network and tailored solutions. The company has developed a suite of offerings designed for different business sizes—small, medium, large, and public sector entities.

“Together, we are building a better tomorrow. We are laying the foundation for a digital economy and helping industries transition to digital platforms,” states the Safaricom Business website. “We aim to create opportunities for Kenyans to participate in our growth by equipping them with the right tools for economic development.”

Safaricom’s product lineup includes call and SMS services, cloud computing, cybersecurity solutions, M-Pesa for businesses, and the Internet of Things, among others.

Mr. Matano discovered Safaricom Business while seeking fiber connectivity for his enterprise. The role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in job creation and poverty alleviation is crucial; the Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis estimates over 7.4 million SMEs employ about 14.9 million Kenyans across various sectors.

To further support MSEs, Safaricom Business hosts monthly forums aimed at equipping entrepreneurs with essential skills for effective business management. These events, known as the “Grow with Safaricom Business” series, provide a platform for entrepreneurs to interact and learn from experts on issues impacting their businesses.

“I believe in continuous learning, which is why I’m always looking for opportunities to expand my knowledge,” shares Mr. Matano.

This Thursday, he will participate in the second of twelve scheduled forums for MSE traders, focusing on “Building a Strong Brand in a Digital Era.” The event will be available both in-person and online, starting at 8 a.m. Attendees can register in advance for in-person attendance or join virtually via Zoom.

“The ‘Grow with Safaricom Business’ series is a platform where MSEs can connect with Safaricom and others to foster growth. We want business owners to see Safaricom as a trusted technology partner in their scaling efforts,” explains Cynthia Karuri-Kropac, Chief Enterprise Business Officer at Safaricom.

These forums aim to empower entrepreneurs by enhancing customer experience, improving operational efficiency, fostering innovation, and developing effective growth strategies. They also focus on raising awareness about opportunities and the challenges encountered in entrepreneurship, contributing to the creation of a resilient and empowered business community.

In March, the inaugural forum attracted representatives from over 50 MSEs, who learned about “Using Technology to Grow Your Business.” Each month until June 2025, Safaricom Business has planned a specific topic for the MSE forums, with the June 2024 focus being “AI and Business” and July’s topic addressing “Compliance and Regulatory” issues.

“I intend to follow all the forums closely. The key difference between thriving and merely surviving in business is the knowledge one possesses,” remarks Mr. Matano.

On Thursday, the forum will feature two guest speakers. Mr. Joram Mwinamo, co-founder of SNDBX International, has engaged in organizational and strategy development projects in nine countries across Africa and Asia. He is an internationally recognized coach and public speaker, serving on the board of Amnesty International and chairing the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs’ steering committee.

Ms. Nyandia Gachago, a digital strategist, specializes in market research, brand development, digital marketing, and public relations. She has collaborated with numerous well-known brands, including Riara University, Pioneer Insurance, and Beyond Flavors, among others.
