Climate-Smart Farming

On June 9, 2023, Kenya announced notable progress in its climate-smart farming initiatives, an approach aimed at increasing crop productivity and resilience to climate change. These initiatives, implemented in collaboration with government agencies and agricultural organizations, have introduced innovative farming techniques and technologies across several regions, particularly focusing on areas heavily impacted by unpredictable weather patterns.

The initiatives emphasize sustainable methods, including water-saving irrigation systems, crop rotation, soil conservation, and the use of drought-resistant seeds. Key partners such as the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and the Ministry of Agriculture have been integral in providing training and resources to farmers, helping them adopt these climate-friendly practices effectively. A number of smallholder farmers report improvements in productivity due to these new methods, which reduce dependency on erratic rainfall and improve soil health.

According to government officials, the adoption of climate-smart practices has enabled farmers to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events, including droughts and floods, which have become more frequent due to climate change. As a result, food security has improved in areas where these initiatives have been implemented, with farmers able to maintain stable yields and contribute to national agricultural output despite challenging conditions.

The government has also highlighted partnerships with private organizations and international donors in making advanced farming technologies accessible to rural farmers. This support has facilitated a wider reach, allowing the benefits of climate-smart agriculture to extend to many regions. The Ministry of Agriculture anticipates expanding the program further, aiming for broader adoption and ensuring that more Kenyan farmers are equipped to handle the ongoing challenges posed by climate change.

To sustain these gains, Kenya plans to invest more in research on climate-resilient crops and modern farming techniques while strengthening rural infrastructure to support large-scale application of these practices. The initiative underscores Kenya’s commitment to building a resilient agricultural sector and achieving food security in the face of climate challenges.
