Emmanuel Sinzohagera

On March 15, the Africa Central Conference made history by electing Rev. Emmanuel Sinzohagera as a United Methodist bishop on the first ballot. Sinzohagera, who is also the Speaker of the Senate in Burundi, received 48 out of 60 votes, surpassing the required 40 votes for election.

“It’s a joyful moment for me, my family, and the church in Burundi. Glory be to God Almighty!” Sinzohagera said after his election.

His vision for Burundi is to ensure that The United Methodist Church remains a beacon of hope, love, and service in the country and beyond.

A Historic Moment for the Africa Central Conference

Sinzohagera is the first bishop elected by the Africa Central Conference, which is set to divide into two new regional bodies on March 16:

  • East Africa Central Conference: Covering Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, and Burundi.
  • Southern Africa Central Conference: Representing Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

The election marks a significant milestone as The United Methodist Church expands its leadership structure in Africa.

Sinzohagera’s Journey in Ministry and Leadership

Rev. Emmanuel Sinzohagera, 50, brings extensive leadership experience to his new role.

Church Leadership:

✅ Legal representative for the Burundi Conference (since 2021)
✅ Dean of superintendents (since 2023)
✅ Pastor, district superintendent, and conference secretary
✅ Founder of the Burundi United Methodist Development Agency

Political & Educational Background:

Speaker of the Senate in Burundi, the third-highest office in the country
✅ Degrees in finance and business administration
Bachelor of Theology – International Leadership University, Burundi
Master’s Degree – Africa University, Zimbabwe
Doctorates – University of Nicosia & Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington

His unique background in faith, finance, and governance positions him to bridge religious and political spheres in serving Burundi and the church.

“Whether I stand behind the pulpit or in parliament, my mission remains unaltered: to serve God and uplift our community,” he shared in an interview last year.

New Leadership & Future Plans

Sinzohagera will be consecrated as bishop on March 16, just before the Africa Central Conference formally splits into two regions. The assignments for bishops in the new central conferences will also be announced.

Bishops in The United Methodist Church play a vital role in:
Appointing clergy within their regions
Handling clergy disciplinary matters under church law
Serving as board members of general church agencies

His election signifies a new chapter for The United Methodist Church in Africa, strengthening leadership and expanding the church’s global mission.
