Tanzania is making great strides in embracing technological advancements, thanks to the efforts of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

In a recent statement, TCRA Director General, Dr. Jabiri Bakari, emphasized the organization’s commitment to driving the digital revolution, improving digital literacy, and ensuring inclusion for all citizens.

This announcement came during the 46th anniversary celebration of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU).

Dr. Bakari highlighted Tanzania’s progress in expanding access to telecommunications and ICT services. He reassured that TCRA remains dedicated to regulating the communication sector and supporting the government’s goal of advancing the digital revolution.

A key part of this mission is to ensure that marginalized groups can also benefit from technological advancements.

For example, TCRA has improved SIM card registration processes to make it easier for people, including older citizens and those with fingerprint issues, to access mobile financial services.

As of September 2023, Tanzania had around 67.1 million active registered SIM cards, surpassing the country’s population of 61.7 million. This means that there are about 109 SIM card subscriptions for every 100 people, a clear sign that technological advancements have greatly expanded connectivity in the country.

Dr. Bakari also noted the significant growth of mobile money services, with 51.4 million users, which represents 76.6 percent of all active SIM cards. These numbers highlight the growing importance of digital financial inclusion as part of the broader technological progress.

TCRA’s focus on digital literacy is another crucial aspect of its efforts to drive technological advancements. Dr. Bakari mentioned the launch of digital clubs in schools and colleges across Tanzania.

These clubs are designed to promote ICT awareness, create opportunities for skill development, and ensure that young people are well-prepared to thrive in the digital age.

By enhancing digital literacy, TCRA aims to create a future where everyone can benefit from technological advancements.

The rapid pace of technological advancements has also pushed TCRA to stay ahead of new trends in technology, such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and edge computing.

Dr. Bakari expressed confidence that TCRA will continue to adapt to these changes and foster an environment that encourages innovation while maintaining high regulatory standards.

One notable example of these efforts is the release of the IMT multi-band frequency spectrum in 2022, which allowed service providers to expand communication services across Tanzania.

This move facilitated the rollout of 5G technology and other cutting-edge communication technologies, ensuring that Tanzania remains at the forefront of technological advancements.

Established in 2003, TCRA regulates various aspects of Tanzania’s communication sector, including telecommunications, internet services, broadcasting, and postal services.

Over the years, TCRA has been actively involved in both regional and international communication bodies, helping to develop frameworks that promote technological advancements in the sector.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, TCRA continues to play a pivotal role in driving technological advancements and ensuring that Tanzania remains a leader in the digital age.

As TCRA marks its 20th anniversary, it reflects on the key role it has played in shaping Tanzania’s communication landscape through technological advancements.

The organization has been instrumental in fostering regional and global partnerships with bodies like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), and others.

These collaborations are vital in developing and implementing regulatory frameworks that align with global standards, allowing Tanzania to stay competitive in the digital world.

One of TCRA’s most significant contributions has been the expansion of internet services and telecommunications across the country. By pushing for the adoption of advanced communication technologies like 5G, TCRA is ensuring that Tanzanians have access to faster, more reliable connectivity.

This is crucial as the country strives to keep pace with global technological advancements, and position itself as a hub for innovation in the region.

Moreover, TCRA’s efforts in digital literacy programs, particularly through the establishment of digital clubs in schools, underline its dedication to empowering the next generation.

These initiatives are designed to ensure that young people are not just consumers of technology, but also creators and innovators in the field.

This focus on education and skill development will play a pivotal role in sustaining the momentum of technological advancements in Tanzania for years to come.

Looking ahead, TCRA remains committed to pushing the boundaries of technological advancements while ensuring that no one is left behind.

Whether it’s through improving access to communication services for marginalized communities, driving digital literacy, or embracing new technologies like AI and IoT, the organization is focused on ensuring that Tanzania continues to benefit from the ongoing digital revolution.

With its strong regulatory framework and forward-thinking approach, TCRA is well-positioned to lead Tanzania into a future defined by technological advancements.

The next phase of growth will likely see even more groundbreaking innovations, as the country leverages the power of technology to drive economic development and improve the lives of its citizens.
