WHO Africa Regional Director-Elect Dies at 55

Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Regional Director-Elect, has passed away at the age of 55. The tragic incident occurred on November 26, 2024, in India, where he was receiving medical treatment. His untimely death has sent shockwaves across the global health community, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, governments, and international organizations.

Dr. Ndugulile, a Tanzanian national, was elected as the WHO Africa Regional Director in May 2024 and was set to assume office in February 2025. Known for his commitment to improving healthcare systems and advancing public health, his career was marked by significant contributions in Tanzania and across the African continent.

Prior to his election, Dr. Ndugulile served as Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children. His tenure was distinguished by efforts to strengthen health policies and his focus on maternal and child health programs. He was also a strong advocate for universal health coverage and the development of sustainable healthcare infrastructures.

The exact cause of his death has not been disclosed, but it has been confirmed that he was undergoing treatment in a hospital in India at the time of his passing. The WHO has expressed deep sorrow over his death, with Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus describing Dr. Ndugulile as a “dedicated leader” whose vision for a healthier Africa inspired many.

In Tanzania, President Samia Suluhu Hassan extended condolences to Dr. Ndugulile’s family and praised his contributions to the nation and the continent. She highlighted his dedication to advancing public health and his role in improving healthcare access for underserved populations.

Dr. Ndugulile’s death leaves a significant void in the leadership of WHO Africa at a time when the region is grappling with challenges such as disease outbreaks, health system strengthening, and the implementation of universal health coverage initiatives.

Plans for his funeral and memorial services have yet to be announced. The WHO is expected to convene a meeting to discuss the transition in leadership following this unexpected development.
