Zambia is in mourning following the sudden death of former President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the age of 68.

The Patriotic Front party and local media reported that Lungu collapsed while exercising at his home in Lusaka and was pronounced dead at Maina Soko Military Hospital.

The Zambian government has confirmed the news and declared a period of national mourning to honor his legacy.

Lungu’s Presidency and Legacy

Edgar Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth president from January 26, 2015, to August 24, 2021, a tenure defined by significant infrastructure development, including roads and energy projects,.

However, it was also marred by economic challenges and rising national debt.

His administration faced criticism for economic mismanagement, yet Lungu remained a polarizing figure, admired by supporters for his bold leadership.

After losing the 2021 election to Hakainde Hichilema, Lungu stepped back from the political spotlight but recently re-emerged as an opposition voice, though a court ruling six months ago blocked his attempt to run for president again.

Circumstances of His Death

Reports indicate that Lungu’s death followed a collapse at his Lusaka residence, with some sources suggesting he was rushed to the military hospital where efforts to revive him failed.

While initial reports point to a sudden health event, conflicting accounts, including claims of cardiac complications during surgery in South Africa, have surfaced but remain unverified. T

he official cause of death has not been confirmed by the government, pending further details.

National and Regional Tributes

Tributes have flooded in from across Zambia and Africa, reflecting Lungu’s regional influence.

President Hakainde Hichilema described the passing as a “tragic loss for the nation,” urging unity during this period of grief.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in South Africa praised Lungu’s efforts to diversify Zambia’s copper-reliant economy and his appointment of the country’s first female vice president.

Social media posts highlight a divided sentiment, with some mourning Lungu’s contributions and others critiquing his legacy, particularly the state of Zambia’s healthcare system, which forced him to seek treatment abroad.

Impact and Reflection

Lungu’s death has sparked calls for national healing, as Zambia grapples with political divisions.

Observers note that his passing underscores the need to separate personal legacies from political rivalries, with some arguing his focus on infrastructure left a lasting mark despite economic setbacks.

The government has yet to announce funeral arrangements, but a state funeral is expected, given Lungu’s stature.

The declared period of national mourning will likely see public events and reflections on his six-year presidency.
