Today, celebrated Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama unveiled his latest monumental sculpture in Accra, drawing widespread attention from art enthusiasts, government officials, and members of the public. Known for his large-scale installations that blend historical and social themes, Mahama’s new work is located in the heart of Accra and reflects Ghana’s past while looking toward its future.

The sculpture, titled “Gateways,” stands prominently in Black Star Square, a symbolic site for national pride and unity. Constructed from recycled materials including metals and textiles, the piece represents Ghana’s resilience and adaptability, two themes central to Mahama’s work. Through “Gateways,” Mahama seeks to create a conversation about the influence of heritage on modern society, encouraging visitors to reflect on Ghana’s journey.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Minister of Culture and Creative Arts, members of the Ghanaian arts community, and representatives from local universities. In his remarks, Mahama emphasized the importance of accessible public art, stating, “Art should exist beyond gallery walls. By placing this sculpture here, I hope to reach and inspire every Ghanaian, from all walks of life, and create a shared experience.”

The sculpture’s imposing size and intricate details immediately caught the attention of attendees. Mahama, who often works with recycled and unconventional materials, constructed the piece to symbolize the resilience of everyday Ghanaians. His work frequently explores themes of labor, migration, and historical memory, and “Gateways” follows this trend, representing both a literal and metaphorical path through Ghana’s complex history.

Alongside the installation, Mahama has organized a series of public workshops and discussions to further engage with the public about the meaning and significance of the piece. These programs will take place throughout the summer, inviting locals and tourists alike to interact with the art and hear directly from the artist about his creative process.

This sculpture is part of a broader trend in Ghana, where public art installations are becoming more common, contributing to the cultural vibrancy of cities like Accra. Experts view “Gateways” as a valuable addition to the public art scene in Ghana and believe it will enhance Accra’s reputation as a center for contemporary African art.

Ibrahim Mahama’s unveiling of “Gateways” has brought a significant new public art piece to Accra, symbolizing both historical continuity and transformation. As the sculpture takes its place in one of Ghana’s most symbolic public spaces, it stands as a testament to Mahama’s commitment to art that resonates with the public.
