Renowned culture promoter and founder of Egbaliganza, Chief Lai Labode, has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish a $1 billion fashion industry dedicated to showcasing and marketing Africa’s rich cultural heritage, particularly that of Egbaland in Ogun State, Nigeria.

Chief Labode made this announcement during a press conference ahead of the Egbaliganza Cultural Fashion Show scheduled for April 2025.

Expanding Africa’s Share in Global Fashion

According to Labode, Africa currently holds only 1.2% of the $31 billion global fashion market. The goal of Egbaliganza is to increase Africa’s share to at least 10-15%, with Egbaland playing a central role in this transformation.

He described the initiative as more than just a fashion event but a cultural and economic renaissance designed to enhance the prosperity of Egbaland and Ogun State as a whole.

Key Highlights of Egbaliganza

The Walkway of Kings Theme: The 2025 edition of Egbaliganza will celebrate the unity and culture of the four major Egba townships—Ake, Oke-Ona, Gbagura, and Owu.

Cultural Attire Revival: Unique Egba-themed attires will be introduced, named after historical figures such as Lisabi Agbongbo Akala and Losi Egba, a revered Ogboni Chief.

Empowering Local Artisans: The initiative will include training in Adire making to reduce dependency on China-made prints and promote indigenous craftsmanship.

Global Fashion Integration: Labode envisions an era where African fashion brands will have flagship stores in major cities like New York, Paris, London, and Milan.

Preserving Egba Heritage for Future Generations

The Executive Project Director of Egbaliganza, Chief AbdulAkeem Mustapha, emphasized the initiative’s role in:

Preserving the Egba culture through festivals, attires, cuisine, and music.
Training young artisans to master the art of Adire (Tiwantiwa) and promote authentic African textiles.
Revitalizing the local fashion economy by investing in indigenous textile production.

Egbaliganza is set to redefine African fashion on the global stage, positioning Egbaland as a hub for creativity, culture, and commerce.
