Dangote Refinery kicks off its free fuel distribution scheme on Monday, targeting select Nigerian states.
The program starts in Lagos, South West, Abuja, Kwara, Delta, Rivers, and Edo. Petrol prices drop to N841 per litre in Lagos and South West, and N851 per litre elsewhere.
Delayed by Logistics
Originally planned for August 2025, the scheme was delayed due to logistics issues in China. Over 1,000 trucks have arrived to support the rollout. More states will join as additional trucks reach Nigeria, expanding the program’s reach.
CNG Truck Rollout
- Fleet size: 10,000 CNG-powered trucks planned for 2025.
- Purpose: Boost logistics and cut distribution costs.
- Challenges: Recent CNG price doubling won’t halt the rollout.
Price Cuts and Impact
The refinery’s price reduction aims to ease fuel costs for Nigerians. “We’re starting free distribution and cutting prices on Monday,” a Dangote spokesperson said. The initiative supports sectors like manufacturing and transport, aiming to lower inflation.
Nationwide Expansion Plans
Dangote plans to scale up the scheme with more trucks and CNG stations. The refinery’s investment in clean-fuel logistics seeks to improve fuel access, especially in underserved areas, while promoting sustainability.
Why It Matters
The free fuel scheme and price cuts could transform Nigeria’s fuel market, reducing costs and boosting economic growth. However, overcoming logistics hurdles remains key to ensuring nationwide access and long-term success.
