Nigeria Faces Blackout as Electricity Workers Strike

Electricity

On September 24, 2025, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) launched a nationwide strike, halting services due to ongoing disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). This could plunge the country into widespread power outages.

Union’s Demands

Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike issued a notice ordering workers to stop work until TCN resolves key issues.

The union accuses TCN of ignoring staff welfare, failing to provide tools, and neglecting workers’ rights.

Grievances Listed

The NUEE demands include enforcing the National Minimum Wage, ending casual labor, supplying work tools, paying salaries owed since April 2025, providing vehicles, updating Personal Protective Equipment (last issued in 2021), addressing TCN’s unbundling issues, and settling retirement benefits.

TCN’s Response

TCN’s management has been criticized for its weak response to these concerns.

“We can’t stay silent while our rights are ignored and the power sector suffers,” the union stated, demanding immediate action.

Past Disruptions

In June 2024, a similar NUEE strike disrupted power across states, forcing urgent talks with the government. The current action signals growing frustration with TCN’s inaction.

Power Sector Struggles

Nigeria’s electricity sector faces ongoing challenges, including low generation and aging infrastructure, despite years of reforms. The strike highlights deep-rooted labor issues threatening reliable power supply.

No Comment from TCN

Attempts to reach TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah for a statement were unsuccessful, leaving the public awaiting updates on negotiations to end the strike.
