The World Bank has rewarded Imo State with a ₦6.8 billion grant as part of its States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) Program. This initiative is aimed at encouraging and supporting Nigerian states that demonstrate excellence in governance and fiscal management.

The Commissioner for Budget, Economic Planning, and Statistics, Dr. Christopher Osuala, disclosed the development during a press briefing on November 21, 2024, in Owerri. He stated that the fund is a recognition of Imo State’s significant improvements in fiscal transparency and accountability.

Dr. Osuala elaborated that the grant comes as a result of rigorous assessments conducted by the World Bank to evaluate compliance with globally recognized governance standards. Imo State reportedly excelled in areas such as budget transparency, timely financial reporting, and sustainable debt management. The commissioner emphasized that the grant represents not only financial assistance but also an acknowledgment of the state’s commitment to good governance.

The World Bank’s SFTAS Program, introduced in 2018, seeks to enhance the financial efficiency of Nigerian states by offering monetary incentives for maintaining strict adherence to transparency and accountability benchmarks. Over the years, the program has disbursed funds to several states, but Imo’s recent success stands out due to the scale of the grant.

The Imo State government has assured residents that the funds will be directed towards projects that promote sustainable development. Governor Hope Uzodinma expressed gratitude to the World Bank and reiterated his administration’s dedication to utilizing the grant effectively.

Governor Uzodinma also called on state officials to remain focused on implementing reforms that would ensure Imo continues to attract international and domestic support. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve service delivery, reduce corruption, and promote people-centered governance.

The ₦6.8 billion grant is expected to further bolster the state’s economic recovery efforts and enhance the living standards of its citizens. Imo State’s exemplary performance serves as a model for other Nigerian states to follow in prioritizing fiscal responsibility and good governance.
