National Grid Collapse Plunges Nigeria Into Darkness

National Grid

In a sudden development on Monday, December 29, 2025, Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered a total collapse. The failure occurred around 3:00 PM, leading to widespread blackouts across the country. This happened as major power plants nationwide lost their total generation capacity.

Earlier in the day, power generation had reached a peak of approximately 4,800 megawatts (MW). However, data now indicates a catastrophic drop to just 139MW. This sharp decline has effectively brought the nation’s energy supply to a complete standstill.

Impact of the Grid Collapse

The current outage has affected all 22 power plants connected to the national grid. At the time of this report, every facility has ceased generation. This has left the majority of the Nigerian population without access to electricity.

Key highlights of the collapse include:

  • Sudden Drop: Generation plummeted from 4,800MW to 139MW in just a few hours.
  • Widespread Blackout: Almost every state in the country is currently experiencing a total power failure.
  • System Failure: Every one of the 22 plants on the grid is currently offline.

Potential Causes and Ongoing Recovery

While authorities have not yet confirmed the official cause, this collapse comes at a sensitive time. The Nigerian Independent System Operator was recently working to increase power generation. These efforts followed significant gas supply constraints caused by recent acts of pipeline vandalism.

Engineers are expected to begin the delicate process of a “black start” shortly. This procedure is necessary to restore power to critical infrastructure, businesses, and residential homes across the federation.

What Happens Next?

Government authorities are currently investigating the root cause of the system failure. Furthermore, the public is awaiting updates regarding the restoration of power.

The System Operator is expected to provide more details on the status of the affected plants as the evening progresses.
