President Bola Tinubu has officially confirmed that Nigeria’s sweeping tax reforms will proceed exactly as scheduled. In a statement released on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the President emphasized that the new laws are essential for building a fair and competitive fiscal foundation.
The implementation includes laws enacted on June 26, 2025, and those scheduled for January 1, 2026. President Tinubu described these changes as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to reset the nation’s economy.
A Structural Reset, Not a Tax Hike
The President clarified the primary intent of the reforms. He stated clearly that the goal is not to increase the tax burden on citizens. Instead, the administration is focusing on three pillars:
- Harmonization: Streamlining different tax types to reduce confusion and double taxation.
- Structural Reset: Creating a modern fiscal system that drives investment.
- Social Contract: Strengthening the relationship between the government and people through shared responsibility.
“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” the President noted.
Protecting Workers and Small Businesses
The administration highlights the “pro-people” nature of these laws. According to the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, the new system protects the most vulnerable members of society.
The projected impact of the reforms includes:
- Workers: Nearly 98% of Nigerian employees will either be fully exempt from taxes or see their liabilities significantly reduced.
- Small Businesses: Approximately 97% of small enterprises will benefit from full tax exemptions or lower rates.
This shift ensures that the weight of national revenue generation moves away from low-income earners toward more robust sectors of the economy.
Final Phase: Delivery and Collaboration
Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Tax Reform Committee, confirmed that the Nigeria Tax Act and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act are in their final delivery stage.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to working with the National Assembly to resolve any emerging issues. He pledged that the government would continue to act in the public interest to ensure a tax system that promotes nationwide prosperity.
