EU Response to US Tariffs: Olaf Scholz Warns Washington Against Trade War
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has issued a strong warning to the United States, stating that while Europe seeks cooperation, it is fully prepared to retaliate if Washington imposes tariffs on steel and aluminum.
Scholz made these remarks on Sunday during the Hanover Industrial Trade Fair, where he also defended Canada’s independence following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about annexing the country.
“Canada is not a state that belongs to anyone else. Canada is a proud, independent nation,” Scholz declared, reaffirming Germany’s support for its transatlantic ally.
Trade War Warning: Europe Will Not Stay Silent
Responding to Trump’s proposed tariffs, Scholz emphasized that Europe remains committed to free trade, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty. However, he made it clear that the EU will not tolerate unfair trade policies.
“We are neither naive nor weak. Trade wars harm everyone,” he stated.
He then issued a direct message to Washington:
“Europe’s goal remains cooperation. But if the U.S. leaves us no choice, such as with tariffs on steel and aluminum, we, as the EU, will react as one.”
What’s at Stake?
The potential U.S. tariffs on European steel and aluminum could spark a trade conflict, leading to:
- Retaliatory tariffs from the EU on American products.
- Higher costs for manufacturers and potential job losses in key industries.
- Strained transatlantic relations at a time when geopolitical cooperation is crucial.
With the 2024 U.S. elections approaching and Trump’s trade policies gaining attention, global markets will be watching closely for any shifts in U.S.-EU economic relations.
