Yakubu Mohammed was more than just a writer; he was a foundational pillar of investigative journalism in Nigeria. His death was confirmed by former Senator Shehu Sani, who praised Mohammed as “one of the most courageous journalists in Nigeria’s media history.”

Mohammed’s career spanned nearly forty years, characterized by a fearless dedication to the truth, particularly during the country’s challenging military eras.

The Newswatch Revolution

In 1984, Mohammed joined forces with Dele Giwa and Dan Agbese to launch Newswatch magazine. The publication became a symbol of defiance and excellence. Under their leadership:

  • Investigative Depth: Newswatch became famous for its rigorous reporting.

  • Fearless Voice: It challenged authorities during the military administration.

  • Structural Influence: Mohammed served as Executive Editor and later Managing Editor, helping steer the magazine into the most influential news publication of its time.

Career Milestones: From Kogi to the Global Stage

Born on April 4, 1950, in the Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mohammed’s journey into the heart of the media began with a solid educational foundation. He graduated from the University of Lagos in 1975 and later refined his craft at the Glasgow College of Technology in Scotland.

Professional Timeline:

  • New Nigerian Newspapers (1976–1980): Served as Associate Editor and eventually Managing Editor.

  • National Concord (1980–1984): Served as Deputy Editor and later Editor.

  • Newswatch Communications (1984–1994+): Co-founder, Executive Editor, and Deputy CEO.

  • Public Service: Beyond the newsroom, he served as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

“Beyond Expectations”: A Final Farewell

Just weeks before the death of Dan Agbese, Yakubu Mohammed launched his memoir, titled ‘Beyond Expectations’, on November 4, 2025, in Lagos. The book serves as a historical record of his life and the evolution of the Nigerian press.

With his passing, the original “Newswatch quartet” has dwindled further. Dele Giwa was tragically killed by a parcel bomb in 1986—a case that remains cold today—and Dan Agbese passed away on November 17, 2025.

Mohammed’s life remains a blueprint for aspiring journalists. He proved that through integrity and professional discipline, the “pen” could truly shape the destiny of a nation.
