The 2024/2025 third term for public primary schools in Abuja has been extended by five weeks.

The extension is from July 28 to August 29, 2025, by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration.

Consequently, this adjustment was made to address significant learning disruptions caused by a three-month strike initiated by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Why the Extension Was Necessary

An indefinite strike was launched by the NUT on March 24, 2025, resulting in the suspension of classes across public primary schools in the FCT.

Subsequently, the strike was resolved on July 9, 2025, following intervention by the FCT Minister.

However, the prolonged disruption created a substantial academic gap.

Therefore, action was deemed necessary by the FCT Administration to mitigate the impact.

Measures to Support Student Recovery

On July 23, 2025, a circular was issued by Dr. Alhassan Sule, Acting Executive Chairman of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB).

Addresed to Education Secretaries in the six area councils: Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, Kwali, and Gwagwalada.

Specifically, two key measures were outlined, which had been approved by the FCT Minister to recover lost learning time:

  1. Extended School Term: The third term has been lengthened by five weeks, running from July 28 to August 29, 2025.
  2. Additional Class Time: An extra period per day has been scheduled for students in Primary 4 to 6, ensuring missed lessons are covered.

Ensuring Smooth Implementation

Strict adherence to these measures was instructed by the UBEB for all stakeholders, including head teachers.

Furthermore, the circular emphasized that all public primary schools in the FCT must be informed to ensure the plan is implemented smoothly.

As a result, seamless coordination is expected across the region.

Restoring the Academic Calendar

The extended term is designed to stabilize the academic calendar.

Which allows sufficient time for students to catch up before the next session begins.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made by the FCT Administration to ensure no child is disadvantaged due to the strike.

Additionally, these steps reflect a commitment to maintaining educational progress in the FCT.

Stay informed about how these changes are impacting education in Abuja as the extended term unfolds.
