Olakunle Nafiu

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has raised alarm over the growing trend of employers turning away corps members.

This issue was spotlighted by Director-General Brig.-Gen Olakunle Nafiu at the 2025 Annual NYSC Corps Employers’ Workshop in Jos on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

He was represented by Mrs Gbamisola Salami, Deputy Director for the North-Central Zone.

Nafiu underscored the critical role employers play in enriching the service year, offering opportunities for skill application and career growth.

Issues and Observations

Nafiu expressed regret over the increasing instances where corps members are denied placements, limiting their practical exposure.

Regular assessments have uncovered employer lapses, such as delays in requesting staff, insufficient support provisions, and occasional mistreatment.

He called on employers to foster nurturing workplaces that boost morale and efficiency.

Push for Partnership

Highlighting the need for teamwork, Nafiu stressed that the NYSC’s goals depend on strong ties with employers, who serve as mentors shaping young leaders.

He appreciated dedicated partners and sought deeper collaboration.

Plateau Coordinator Mr Jonathan Yavala reinforced this, noting the workshop aims to improve communication and streamline corps member integration, under the theme:

“Partners in Progress: Boosting Corps Members’ Welfare and Output.”

Stakeholder Engagement

Mr Musa Ashoms, Plateau’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and NYSC state Governing Board Chairman, lauded the workshop for uniting stakeholders to create supportive settings where corps members can contribute to community progress.
