The Beninese music icon and five-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo has been named a recipient of a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for 2026.

This award has made her  the first African artist to receive this prestigious honor.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the selection, placing Kidjo alongside global stars like Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet, and Shaquille O’Neal, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to music and culture.

A Trailblazing Musical Career

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Kidjo, 64, has established herself as one of Africa’s most influential musical exports.

Renowned for her powerful voice and genre-blending style, she fuses Afrobeat, traditional West African rhythms, funk, jazz, and Latin influences, creating a sound that resonates globally.

Her acclaimed albums, including Logozo (1991), Black Ivory Soul (2002), Eve (2014), Celia (2019), and the Grammy-winning Mother Nature (2021), have introduced African music to mainstream audiences while earning critical acclaim and international awards.

Collaborations with African Talent

In recent years, Kidjo has championed emerging African artists, fostering cross-generational and cross-genre collaborations.

Her 2021 album Mother Nature featured Nigerian stars Burna Boy and Yemi Alade, showcasing her commitment to amplifying new voices.

She continued this trend with the 2023 hit single “Na Money” alongside Davido and the 2024 release “Joy,” a pan-African anthem celebrating unity and resilience, featuring Davido and Mr Eazi.

These projects highlight her role in bridging African music with global audiences.

Humanitarian Impact

Beyond her musical achievements, Kidjo is a dedicated humanitarian.

As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, she advocates for global children’s rights, and through her Batonga Foundation, founded in 2006.

She empowers adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa through education and mentorship programs.

Her advocacy work has amplified marginalized voices and addressed critical social issues, earning her accolades such as the Grammy for Best Global Music Performance in 2025 for “Joy.”

Significance of the Honor

Kidjo’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star marks a historic milestone for African representation in global entertainment.

Social media posts celebrated her achievement, with fans calling her a “trailblazer” and “Africa’s musical ambassador.”

The recognition underscores her influence in promoting African culture and fostering unity through music.

Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, praised Kidjo’s “unique artistry and humanitarian spirit,” noting her star will be a landmark for diversity in the industry.

Looking Ahead

As Kidjo prepares for her star’s unveiling in 2026, she continues to perform and advocate globally, with upcoming projects teased on social media, including potential collaborations with emerging African artists.

Her legacy as a pioneer in music and social change cements her as a global icon, inspiring generations and elevating African artistry on the world stage.
