FESTIVAL

A severe fuel blockade has brought Mali’s capital city to a near standstill. Yet, despite the crisis, giant, colorful marionettes paraded through Bamako’s streets this week in a powerful display of resilience.

The annual Rendez-Vous Chez Nous festival went ahead, determined to bring joy to a city struggling under economic stress and militant threats.

Art Continues Despite Adversity

The fuel blockade, imposed by militants linked to Al-Qaeda, has severely impacted Bamako. Schools have closed, commerce is paralyzed, and long queues for petrol snake through the streets.

Nevertheless, the ninth edition of the puppet festival featured over 200 puppets marching through residential neighborhoods.

“We as artists don’t give up our work because of difficult times,” asserted Yacouba Magassouba, the director of the Nama company, which organizes the gathering. “We continue to show the whole world that we exist.”

For citizens like Yacouba Doumbia, the spectacle provided necessary relief. “These demonstrations can help us forget our worries, like the security problems and fuel crisis,” he explained.

Ancestral Roots Meet Modern City Life

The festival creatively blends Mali’s rich puppetry history with innovative urban themes. “The history of puppetry in Mali is an ancestral history, dating back centuries,” Magassouba clarified. He noted that ancestors originally used puppets to communicate cultural values and educate children.

Theater director Adama Traore highlighted the art form’s contemporary evolution. He pointed out that today’s puppets depict “much more urban characters.” This shift allows “children to dream” while successfully utilizing cultural heritage within modern settings.

Sustaining Culture Without Support

The vibrant celebration conceals serious challenges within Mali’s cultural sector. International partners withdrew vital funding following the 2020 military coup. As a result, artists have faced significant hurdles in sustaining their creative work.

The festival’s firm resolve to proceed despite these difficulties emphasizes the crucial role of art. Cultural performances are essential for maintaining social cohesion and hope in a nation where they have become both more challenging and more necessary than ever before.
