FUNKE AKINDELE

Nollywood has officially entered a new era. On Monday, January 12, 2026, industry reports confirmed that filmmaker Funke Akindele has become the first Nigerian producer to hit the ₦2 billion mark at the domestic box office with a single title.

Her latest cinematic offering, Behind the Scenes, has not only shattered local records but has also positioned itself as the highest-grossing Nollywood film in Africa, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

Industry Reactions: Mo Bimpe Crowns the “Queen”

The milestone has sparked a wave of celebrations across the entertainment industry. Fellow actress and producer Mo Bimpe (Adebimpe Oyebade) took to social media to laud Akindele for her relentless consistency.

Describing the feat as “inspiring,” Bimpe highlighted that the achievement was not just a win for Akindele but a lighthouse for other filmmakers.

“My Queen has shattered records again!” Bimpe shared with her followers. “The undisputed Multibillion Queen of the Box Office. You keep breaking records, and it is truly inspiring.”

Bimpe also urged fans to continue supporting the film, which remains in theaters nationwide, calling it a “masterpiece” that every Nigerian should experience.

The Background Story: The Path to ₦2 Billion

To appreciate the magnitude of this achievement, one must look at the meteoric rise of the “Funke Akindele brand” over the last three years. This isn’t just a lucky strike; it is the result of a calculated, three-year dominance of the “Detty December” cinema season.

The Blueprint: A Tribe Called Judah (2023)

In December 2023, Akindele changed the industry forever with A Tribe Called Judah. It became the first Nollywood film to gross ₦1 billion, proving that the local market had the volume and the willingness to support big-budget, high-quality indigenous stories.

The Acceleration: Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024)

A year later, she returned with Everybody Loves Jenifa. The film reached the billion-naira milestone even faster than its predecessor, eventually closing at approximately ₦1.88 billion. This solidified the fact that Akindele’s audience was growing exponentially year over year.

The Landmark: Behind the Scenes (2025/2026)

Released on December 12, 2025, Behind the Scenes tackled the relatable theme of “Black Tax”—the financial pressure on successful individuals to support their extended families.

The film resonated deeply with both the middle class and the youth, leading to a record-breaking Boxing Day gross of ₦129.5 million in a single day. Within just five weeks, the film officially crossed the ₦2.1 billion mark, making Akindele the first filmmaker to rank at the top of the African box office for three consecutive years.

Analysis: Why This Matters

For years, the “ceiling” for Nollywood films was thought to be a few hundred million naira. Critics often cited inflation and the high cost of cinema tickets as barriers. However, Akindele’s success suggests a different reality: Audience Loyalty.

By focusing on “social realism”—stories that reflect the everyday struggles and triumphs of Nigerians—Akindele has moved cinema from an elite luxury to a cultural movement. As Mo Bimpe noted, the sights are now set on the ₦3 billion mark. Given current trajectories, that milestone may be closer than the industry thinks.
